Job description:
Tutors at The Olive Grove Academy (hereby referred to at TOGA) fill the valuable role of mentoring the students, affecting atmosphere and guiding learning. They are themselves eager lifelong learners and inspire their students with that lifestyle.
Please understand that complete, practical and comprehensive training will be given and expected for every tutor at TOGA. Tutors will be thoroughly trained in these roles. We are looking for individuals that are inspired by the teaching of Charlotte Mason and willing to engage in learning and implementing those principles.
Tutors roles-
Look over lesson plans from the Alveary curriculum, prepare as needed to instruct students (explain a few vocabulary words, be prepared for student narrations, know potential sensitive topics).
Read ahead far enough to know what supplies are coming up and let the head of school know.
Be orderly by having supplies, copies and books ready.
Establish a good system to move from subject to subject smoothly (give students roles and jobs to aid in this process).
Keep lessons short and give each lesson it’s proper time (let students continue wondering and carry the conversation on after class rather than talk on and on in any one topic).
Understand the value and purpose of narration and require narration at every lesson.
Understand your role as mentor. Tutors are not experts completely skilled in every subject, they are guides connecting students with great books, solid ideas and timeless truths. Their roles are to introduce students to life-giving ideas and gain relationships with those ideas that will take deep root in their lives and lead them to the lifestyle of a life-long learner.
Tutors do not “teach to the test”. They lead students to build relationships with knowledge and truth.
Tutors believe in God’s created order and trust that God’s word is foundational and the source of all truth.
Tutors apply themselves in continuing to learn Charlotte Mason principles and implement them into the classroom.
Update lesson plans by Saturday for the following week to be prepared for a substitute if needed.
Read the Alveary’s Member Tutorial and familiarize yourself with the website.
Look over Alveary exams, decide with the head of school which exams will be given and prepare those questions for exam week.
